Where are you based?
New York/New Jersey USA.
When did you first take a bass in
your hands? 26 years old.
What attracted you to playing bass?
The ever-loving beat, baby.
Did you play any other instrument
before you started playing bass?
Nope.
Can you remember the first song you
ever learned on bass? A song I made
up called 'A Huge and Terrible Lack of You'.
What was your very first public
performance? Halloween party at my
house on 88th St in NYC.
What’s your current band?
America's Sweetheart for the last 7 years.
What’s your main bass?
Fender Precision - the first Japenese copy
made ... I love it! She's ruby red with an alder body and a split
single-coil P Bass pickup and a maple neck (short scale)
What strings to you like best?
D'Addario EXL170TP
What is your backline bass amp
setup? Trace Elliot- trés '80s!
Fingers, plectrum or both?
both - depending on what kind of sound the
song itself is demanding
What type of music do you play?
Rock with punk/pop sensibilities.
Who do you listen to when you’re not
playing? Donkey Punch (Chicago based
punk band) is my new favourite...
Have you recorded/released any CDs?
America's Sweetheart has one album
and one demo. We are completing our second album in December - exciting!
What was your best gig/venue ever?
Home Depot- we played on a stage
they built for us in the parking lot. They were incredibly accommodating
and enthusiastic. We had a great time, played to a wide range of people -
lots of kids and older folks who generally don't go to rock clubs. There
was a lot of dancing and clapping...loads of fun had by all!
What was your worst moment onstage?
Well that would be the day of the
VIRUS. I was quite ill. Let me put it this way, I required a bucket with
me on stage at all times and the moment we finished our set, and I mean
the MOMENT the last note was plucked, I jumped off the front of the stage
and ran to the bathroom where I was sick for a long time. It was not sexy.
What’s your favourite album/CD?
I hope it's not too queer to say
'Garden State'. I love that CD.
Do you own any other instruments?
I have two additional basses, a G&L and a Phoenix Electra- it's pink and
fuzzy.
Do you sing?
Yes I do.
What’s your opinion on basses with
more than 4 strings? They're neat,
but I don't play one.
What do you feel is the bass-players
function in a band? I think of the
bass as being a liaise between drummer and guitar. I don't mean that the
guitarist needs the bass to understand the drums- we're all listening to
the mighty drummer. I mean liaise for the listener. Someone listening to a
song may not even be particularly aware of the bass, but if the bass is
locking properly with the drum and melodically/rhythmically with the
guitar, then the listener is being offered another dimension that they are
probably more aware of on a visceral level than anything else. You can
feel a good bass line in your guts and you don't need to understand that
it's the bass- per se- you just like it, because it feels
good...hopefully.
Did you ever have a famous person in
your audience? Well we met our
producer, Godfrey Diamond (New York based record producer/songwriter who's
body of work includes Lou Reed, Aerosmith, Billy Squier, The Bogmen, and
many others at one of our shows. We are going back into the studio with
him in December to complete our record.
What are your ambitions?
Rock Japan. Rock the world. Tour, tour,
tour!
